Anaphylaxis Anniversary

I just realized that the 2 year anniversary of Miles's first and only anaphylactic reaction was last Friday, June 6th. Yes, it happened on 06/06/06. How could we ever forget that date?

Anyways, it's been 2 years since that scary, enlightening, miraculous day. Scary that Miles had such a horrible, life threatening reaction to his baby food. Enlightening because it started us on the path to answers as to why he was a crabby, hivey, eczema baby. And miraculous, because God gave me the wisdom to do what was needed to do to save my little boy's life.....stop the food, give Benedryl, and rush to the ER.

I don't really like to think about it. But we have come a long way in two years. And June 6th, 2008 was much happier. We spent a lot of time with Cousin Josie at Grandma's house. And then Miles and I had a date to some fireworks in town. He really liked them and now we are looking forward to more in July. Miles really liked the "happy face fireworks". And so did I. It was a happy face kind of day.

What a coincidence...

Flynn had her "big" anaphylaxis last year, JUNE 7TH, at a birthday party! It was the only time I've used her epi. And I pray I never have to use again.
I blogged about it afterward, http://orangemomma.blogspot.com/2007/06/its-official-im-human.html

I'm thankful for you that you had your wits about you to do what you needed to! How many people would've know the right thing to do?

There was a reason God blessed us with allergy children, He apparently knew we could handle it! ;)

aw, poor flynn. that is good that you were there. i will have to read the story.

actually, i really didn't know what i was doing at the time. i just knew the hives were different than usual, white and around the mouth/hands instead of red on the cheeks. i also knew the benedryl is what we use for hives. but i had no idea it was a serious allergic reaction going on. when he started wheezing, my first thought was that a cold was coming on. and the swallowing...i had no idea on that but that was my first indication to get in the car. i thought we'd just go to the peds or prompt care until i saw his whole face bright red and swollen in the back seat. that's when i turned for the ER.

so that's why i'm really grateful that i did the right things and quickly...especially for not knowing what was going on or what needed to be done. we did not have an epi pen at that time.

and since we've had no accidents since that, i've not used the epi. i hope i never have to. i will have to read your experience so i know what to do.

wow, june must be the month for anaphalaxis. let's be careful!

Hey sis,
Thank God you knew what to do, although no reason for knowing! Amy is right, God sure knew he was blessing these children with parents who could handle it; I don't know that I would have known what to do, or even to have Benadryl on hand...except that you made me mindful of that! I carry it with me EVERYWHERE, even now~!
Well, what a weird coincidence; Rowan's choking happened on 6-7-08, a date I also will NEVER forget. I have been online looking for a first aid course to take. Being in the classroom, I always wondered if I would keep my cool long enough to help a child, and in this event I clearly lost my head!!! I need to know that I can keep my calm, especially since he has choked once yesterday and once today (though not as serious as in Florida, I was able to get the good right up, THANK THE LORD!!!). I don't know why he chokes so easily and so often??? I will let you know what I find on the classes, and give Miles and Graham some extra kisses for us, k? Love you guys!!!

Oh, also, did you know that when a child passes out from choking (which Rowan did), you have SIX minutes before it will cause brain damage??? This is a freaky thing to me!!!

Hey Jam,
Just so you know, they do cover Anaphylaxis shock and allergic reactions at the first aid training!!! I thought it was really neat to learn more about it, and I even told a couple of MILES stories!!! :L The lady teaching it was pretty impressed with what I knew. HEHEHE I am on this!
